Lars Nootbaar was born on September 8, 1997, in El Segundo, California, to an American father of European descent, Charlie Nootbaar, and a Japanese mother, Kumiko Enokida.

He has an older brother, Nigel, who also played baseball at the University of Southern California (USC).

His middle name, Tatsuji, is a tribute to his maternal grandfather, who was a Japanese-American veteran of World War II.
